The GMT Master is one of Rolex's most iconic watches.
With its long run, Rolex has continually improved its look and
features, offering extremely successful GMT references, such as
Reference 1675. Produced from 1959 until 1980, Ref 1675 saw a few minor
alterations during its long run.
Initially available in stainless steel, Ref 1675's case measured 40mm
in diameter, and, by 1965, featured pointed crown guards with a chapter
ring dial. From about 1959 to 1964, the stainless steel case encompassed Rolex's caliber 1565 movement.
By 1965 this movement was replaced by caliber 1575. Some GMT Master
1675s feature caliber 1570 as well as 1565, though caliber 1575 is the
most common. The case, as common with Rolex watches, is water proof up to 50 meters (165 feet). Hacking was introduced to the movement in 1971.
Other alterations included additional finishes and substitutions. Beginning in 1968, customers could choose a Jubilee 62510 bracelet over the original Oyster 78360 bracelet. Gilt dials were another popular addition, as well as custom logos, such as The Oman Marine Ministry or Tiffany & Co. The GMT Master Ref 1675 was also the first GMT to be available in gold. This was, perhaps, the most striking alteration.
From 1959 to 1964 the GMT Master Ref 1675 featured a white gloss dial. From 1965 until the end of production in 1980, Ref 1675 featured a Matt dial with white printing.
The dial featured Tritium indexes as well as the new in-print of
“Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” The dial and case are
topped with an acrylic crystal.
The GMT Master Reference 1675 is a highly sought after vintage Rolex, thanks in large part to its unique bezel options. Though available in a muted black, the most popular bezel inlay is probably the “Pepsi” color combination of red and blue. Eventually, Rolex released a “Coke” combination of red and black. However, the red of the Coke bezel appears slightly darker when compared to the Pepsi red.
Because the Rolex GMT Master 1675 was produced for such a long time, it
is one of the easier vintage Rolex watches for collectors to acquire. However, not all Ref 1675s are equal. Those that are older and feature rarer bezels will certainly be worth more.
However, for those who are wishing to begin their vintage Rolex
collection, the GMT Master 1675 is certainly a great place to start.
